Parental Input Being Sought on Dress Code
October 6, 2008 on 8:40 amAn Ad Hoc Dress Code Committee has been formed to review Shelby County Schools’ dress code. The
committee is comprised of parents, teachers and school administrators. The committee was formed in response to opinions expressed by both parents and school officials regarding the dress code. The rationale for revisiting the dress code covered several areas including: difficulty in enforcing the dress code; inconsistency in enforcing the dress code; and safety and modesty issues. Please go to the Shelby County Schools web site www.scsk12.org and click on to SCS DRESS CODE SURVEY to express your opinion.
The tentative timetable for the process will be as follows:
•Beginning on September 12th - anyone wanting to provide input to the committee can click on to the
Shelby County School web site www.scsk12.org and look for SCS DRESS CODE SURVEY.
•All responses to the web site link will be shared with the Dress Code Committee Members.
•The Dress Code Committee, based on community input from the survey, will formulate proposals to be voted upon by all the dress code stake holders (SCS students, SCS parents, SCS employees, and community members with no child currently enrolled in the system).
•Sometime in November, dress code proposals will be placed on the SCS web site to be voted upon. (The survey will be programed to accept only one response per computer.) If someone does not have access to a computer, hard copies of the survey will be available to be picked up and turned in at each school.
•The survey will be disaggregated into the four groups of stake holders, as well as into an overall tally.
•The Committee will present a final proposal to the Board to be voted upon at their January meeting. Two affirmative votes are required if any changes are to be made to the existing dress code policy.
•March 1st is the tentative deadline that has been set for the passage of any changes to the existing dress code. Any changes that are adopted will be earmarked to go into effect next school year. (August of 2009)
Through the use of technology, hopefully this process will allow for unprecedented levels of input and participation.

Box Tops for Education
September 4, 2008 on 12:54 pmAltruria Elementary School participates in Boxtops for Education. There are hundreds of products that have a small hot pink Boxtop emblem on them. Please help our school earn 10 cents per boxtop (up to a maximum of $20,000.00 per year!) by doing the following:
Cut out the pink boxtop emblems off many products you are already buying.
Collect at least 15 boxtops in a baggie or envelope.
Write your child’s name, grade level, teacher, and number of boxtops on the envelope or baggie.
Send the envelope or baggie to the office with your child.
Your child will get to pick a prize from Ms. Johnson’s treasure chest.
His/her name will also be entered into a drawing for a large prize for each 15 boxtops brought in. Drawings are held several times per year. Our first drawing will be held on September 23rd during Open House, and the prize is a new bicycle and helmet!
