Altruria remembers 9/11

The rain held off Sept. 11, as students, staff and special guests, gathered for the annual “Altruria Elementary School Remembers 9/11″ ceremony in memory of the lives lost during the tragedy that shocked the world six years ago.

With a wave of red, white and blue, students settled around the flag pole on the front lawn of the elementary school on Deermont Drive in Bartlett with faculty and friends in their patriotic attire, standing in silence as the American Legion Post 249 of Bartlett raised its flag to half-staff.

With hands over their hearts, elementary students stood at attention and led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance, before the national anthem sounded across the school grounds.

After a moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives on that tragic day, and to those that serve and have served our country, speakers Bartlett Fire Chief Terry Wiggins, Bartlett Asst. Police Chief Gary Rickard and Bartlett Mayor Keith McDonald each gave a brief presentation. Soloist Karen Worley presented the proclamation by singing loud and free, “God Bless America.” Following the program, students, faculty and guests exited in silence.
